Welcome to a brand new season of For Your Consideration, the internet’s most beloved awards talk show, hosted by Oscar experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and Jeff Sneider.
This week, the gang tackles the Best Picture race, which is currently led by widely presumed frontrunner The Fabelmans, a coming-of-age film that chronicles the rocky childhood of its Oscar-winning director, Steven Spielberg. Will that Universal release run away with the prize or could a blockbuster like Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick present a challenge?
And speaking of blockbusters, the coming weeks bring two Disney tentpoles with Oscar hopes — Ryan Coogler‘s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and James Cameron‘s Avatar: The Way of Water. The first entries in both of those hit franchises secured Best Picture nominations, and there’s no reason to think that their sequels won’t repeat the feat.
Of course, A24 will also make a strong push for Everything Everywhere All at Once, which is expected to score multiple acting nominations, while the female-led films She Said and Women Talking are also likely to be formidable contenders this year.
However, if there’s one movie that could prove to be a thorn in The Fabelmans‘ side all season, it’s The Banshees of Inisherin, which Jeff thinks is undeniably good, but may be a little too weird for the Academy’s taste.
