John Waters to Direct His First Movie in 18 Years — an Adaptation of His Own Novel Liarmouth

It’s hard to believe that John Waters hasn’t directed a movie in 18 years — not since 2004’s NC-17 sex comedy A Dirty Shame — but thankfully, he’s set to return behind the camera for an adaptation of his 2022 novel Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance.

Waters will write and direct Liarmouth, which Steve Rabineau will produce for Village Roadshow.

The novel follows three generations of women in the same family — Adora, who runs an unauthorized veterinarian practice in Manhattan that specializes in plastic surgery for pets; Adora’s daughter, Marsha, a pathological thief and misanthrope who is the “liarmouth” of the title; and Marsha’s daughter, Poppy, who runs a trampoline park on the outskirts of Baltimore. Eventually, they all conspire to kill each other.

Uh… this sounds amazing. I hope Hollywood’s top actresses are forced to audition for it.

Liarmouth is the craziest thing I’ve written in a while so maybe it’s fitting that my novel was shocking enough to jumpstart the engine of my film career,” Waters said in a statement, adding that he’s “thrilled to be back in the movie business, hopefully to spread demented joy to adventuresome moviegoers around the world.”

Waters is best known for directing films such as Pink Flamingos (1972) and Polyester (1981), but he stepped away from filmmaking after A Dirty Shame, preferring to publish a series of non-fiction books and deliver spoken word performances, as well as make the occasional cameo in a film or TV series.

Long thought retired at 76 years old, Waters wasn’t content to simply be a hero of cult cinema, and it’s great to see him returning behind the camera again. For the record, my favorite John Waters movie is Serial Mom, and for that, I will not apologize.
