Super Mario Bros. Trailer Finds Bowser Breathing Fire and Chris Pratt Entering the Mushroom Kingdom

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo’s animated movie Super Mario Bros., which looks like someone animated my childhood. Simply put, it looks glorious.

Chris Pratt voices the titular plumber, while Charlie Day voices his brother, Luigi. The rest of the A-list voice cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, who leads Bowser’s army of Koopa Troopas.

Bowser is the clear star of the first trailer, though we do get a taste of Pratt’s accent as Mario, and we get to see Luigi in action by the end of it as well. The trailer debuted Thursday during a Nintendo Direct presentation.

Chris Meledandri produced the Super Mario Bros. movie for Illumination, along with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are directing from a script by Matthew Fogel (talk about a dream assignment!), and Universal will release the movie on April 27, 2023. I predict that it will open absolutely huge.

“I worked really closely with the directors [on] trying out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear… [It’s] unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before,” Pratt previously told Variety.
