2024 Writers Guild Awards Nominations Announced with Many Repeats from Oscars, Emmys

Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) and Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023. Winners will be honored at the 2024 Writers Guild Awards ceremony on Sunday, April 14, 2024.

On the film side of things, many of the films that were nominated for Oscars last month were included, including Christopher Nolan‘s screenplay for Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach‘s screenplay for Barbiealthough the WGA has placed the latter in Original Screenplay, rather than Adapted. Otherwise, the WGA picked three of the same Original Screenplays and three of the same Adapted Screenplays with a few not being eligible by WGA rules, most notably Tony McNamara‘s screenplay for Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Poor ThingsJonathan Glazer‘s The Zone of Interest, and Justine Triet‘s Anatomy of a Fall. The screenplay for Bradley Cooper‘s Maestro also wasn’t nominated, though Alex Convery‘s critically-acclaimed screenplay for Ben Affleck‘s Air and the Adapted Screenplay for Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret and (possibly surprisingly) the screenplay for NYAD.

This year will be a little different also because the WGA Awards will be handed a month after the Oscars, which means they can’t be used as any sort of precursor for how things might pan out on Oscar night.

As far as television, many of the same shows popped up in the WGA nominations that were previously nominated and in some cases, won, at the Emmys last month: BeefSuccessionThe Bear, The Last of Us, etc. although the WGA nominations ran through December vs. the July 1 cut-off for the Emmys.
