For Your Consideration: Final Oscar Nomination Predictions in 9 Major Categories

Welcome to a brand new episode of For Your Consideration, the internet’s most beloved awards talk show, hosted by Oscar experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and Jeff Sneider

This week, the gang makes their final Oscar nomination predictions in nine major categories — Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, and Animated Feature.

One of the most contentious discussions surrounds the directing category, where even locks like Steven Spielberg are being second-guessed in the wake of The Fabelmans‘ lackluster showing among BAFTA voters. And he won Best Director at the Golden Globes! Right now, it seems like Todd Field (TÁR) may be the only sure bet.

The real question is whether a female director will be nominated, be it Sarah Polley (Women Talking), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), or Charlotte Wells (Aftersun). Perri insists there will be, but Jeff isn’t quite so sure, especially since he thinks Maria Schrader delivered the year’s best female-directed film with She Said. He also warns his co-hosts to keep an eye out for Edward Berger, (All Quiet on the Western Front), who could surprise come Tuesday morning when nominations are announced.

Elsewhere, Scott and Jeff think Tom Cruise is going to defy the SAG Awards voters and land an Oscar nomination for his electric movie star turn in Top Gun: Maverick, though Perri feels the momentum shifting in the favor of Aftersun star Paul Mescal.

Finally, everyone seems to be in agreement that Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is a shoo-in to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, though not everyone agrees on the fifth film that will find its way into this race. Scott and Perri suspect it will be fellow Netflix release Wendell & Wild, though Jeff is going with Inu-Oh because he likes GKIDS’ history in this category.

Above the Line will be the home of For Your Consideration this season, though all episodes will debut on Perri’s YouTube channel, so be sure to leave a comment with your own thoughts on this year’s Oscar race. You can follow the gang on Twitter and Instagram at @MovieMantz, @PNemiroff, and @TheInSneider, and if you missed last week’s episode recapping the DGA, PGA and SAG award nominations, you can catch it right here.

Until next time, we’ll FYC-ya later!
