The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once each earned five Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations on Wednesday, tying Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, and Doubt for the most SAG Awards nominations ever.
Both films earned one lead acting nomination and three supporting acting nominations, along with a nod for Best Ensemble, which is considered the guild’s highest honor. The other three films up for the SAG’s biggest prize are The Fabelmans, Women Talking, and Babylon.
The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin are both coming off Best Picture wins at the Golden Globes on Tuesday night, as well as DGA nominations for directors Steven Spielberg and Martin McDonagh. Everything Everywhere directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert were also nominated for a DGA Award, so their A24 movie will enter the SAG Awards with some momentum.
Hustle star Adam Sandler was a major surprise among SAG’s Best Actor nominees after being passed over for his acclaimed turn in Uncut Gems, as many pundits had expected Tom Cruise to land a nod. Likewise, The Fabelmans star Michelle Williams found herself snubbed in favor of Blonde actress Ana de Armas.
On the TV side, Netflix’s acclaimed crime series Ozark led the way, as all three of its main stars were nominated, while Julia Garner earned a second nod for her turn as scammer Anna Delvey in the streamer’s limited series Inventing Anna. HBO’s House of the Dragon was snubbed after winning the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series, and its sci-fi/fantasy rival, Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, also found itself on the outside looking in.
The SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix’s YouTube channel on Sunday, Feb. 26 from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, and next year, the show will begin streaming on Netflix proper.
