For Your Consideration: Is Steven Spielberg Really the Only Lock for a Best Director Nomination?

Welcome to a brand new episode of For Your Consideration, the internet’s most beloved awards talk show, hosted by Oscar experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and Jeff Sneider

This week, the gang tackles the Best Director race, which only appears to have one lock right now — Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans), who previously won this award for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.

Elsewhere, Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Todd Field (TÁR) have directed two of the year’s most acclaimed arthouse films, while Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) made two of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters. And past winner James Cameron (Avatar: The Way of Water) still looms large on the horizon.

Meanwhile, don’t discount Daniels, whose A24 movie Everything Everywhere All at Once scored with both critics and audiences, as did Elvis from director Baz Luhrmann.

All three FYC hosts believe there will be a female filmmaker nominated this year, and while Sarah Polley (Women Talking) may be the heavy favorite for that honor, Jeff thinks Maria Schrader (She Said) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) are far more deserving.

Finally, past Oscar winners Sam Mendes (Empire of Light), Damien Chazelle (Babylon), and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Bardo) can’t be ignored this season, nor can international talents such as Park Chan-wook (Decision to Leave) and Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness).

Above the Line will be the home of For Your Consideration this season, though all episodes will debut on Perri’s YouTube channel, so be sure to leave a comment with your own thoughts on this year’s Best Actress race. You can follow the gang on Twitter and Instagram at @MovieMantz, @PNemiroff, and @TheInSneider, and if you missed last week’s episode about the Best Supporting Actor race, you can catch it right here.

Until next time, we’ll FYC-ya later!
