Dominique Thorne, who plays scene-stealer Riri Williams in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has joined the cast of Freaky Tales, a new movie from the directors of Captain Marvel that will also feature Euphoria star Angus Cloud.
Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis, and Captain Marvel star Ben Mendelsohn will lead an ensemble that also includes Jack Champion, Michelle Farrah Huang, and Keir Gilchrist, who previously worked with the directors on It’s Kind of a Funny Story. The film will also feature a collection of Oakland natives, which makes sense given its setting.
Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are writing and directing Freaky Tales, which is set in 1987 and inspired by Fleck’s experience growing up in the Bay Area. The film will feature four interconnected stories, some of which deal with notable historical events.
eOne is financing the project as well as producing alongside MACRO. Jelani Johnson and Poppy Hanks will produce via MACRO Film Studios, whose Charles D. King and James F. Lopez will serve as executive producers alongside eOne’s Jillian Share and Jen Gorton, as well as rapper Too $hort and his manager David Weintraub.
eOne’s Chanel Vidal will oversee production along with Share and Gorton, while Grammy winner Raphael Saadiq — himself an Oakland native — will oversee the music for the film.
Thorne will reprise her Wakanda Forever role in the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart, while Cloud will soon be seen in the indie movie The Line, which co-stars Alex Wolff, Austin Abrams, Lewis Pullman, and Halle Bailey. Deadline broke the news of their casting in Freaky Tales.
