The TV Academy has unveiled the nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards, which are currently scheduled for Sept. 18, though they could be pushed to November or even January depending on whether SAG-AFTRA calls a strike at the stroke of midnight tonight, and how long the AMPTP is willing to let that strike last.
Succession is a heavy favorite in the drama category, where fellow HBO shows The White Lotus and The Last of Us appear to be its main competition, while Abbott Elementary will duke it out with The Bear and Ted Lasso on the comedy side of things.
In the limited series category, Netflix’s Dahmer will face off against Netflix’s Beef, as Apple’s chilling Black Bird was snubbed, having received a chilly reception from Emmy voters. On the bright side, stars Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser were nominated, while Ray Liotta received a posthumous nomination.
“I am so grateful to the members of the Television Academy for honoring my Dad with this nomination. He was so incredibly proud of his performance in Black Bird, and it would mean the world to him to be nominated alongside Taron and Paul,” his daughter, Karsen Liotta, said in a statement.
While HBO was clearly the big winner on Wednesday, with Succession picking up 27 nominations, Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm also had a great day, as both Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi picked up prized nods after striking a chord with genre-loving voters. Other genre shows such as HBO’s House of the Dragon and The Last of Us were also honored with a slew of nominations, though Amazon’s pricey Lord of the Rings series was shut out.
Elsewhere, nominees ranging from Jessica Chastain to Vanderpump Rules earned their first Emmy nominations, while two-time Emmy winner Paris Barclay became the first Black director to be nominated in the Drama, Comedy, and Limited/Anthology Series or TV Movie categories. In other notable news, Barack and Michelle Obama earned separate Emmy nominations, while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were shut out along with perceived favorites such as Harrison Ford (Shrinking) and Elizabeth Olsen (Love & Death).
This year’s Emmy nominations honor TV shows that aired between June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. The two-night Creative Arts Emmys are currently slated for Sept. 9 and 10, and that show will be edited into a single broadcast that will air on FXX on Sept. 10. For now, here are the nominees, as announced Wednesday morning by Yvette Nicole Brown and Television Academy chairman and CEO Frank Scherma.
