Even though prosecutors in Orange County, California dropped their charges against animation king Justin Roiland, Hulu has nonetheless tapped Dan Stevens to replace Roiland as the voice of Korvo, the lead character on the streamer’s animated comedy Solar Opposites.
In addition to losing his producing deal with 20th Animation, Roiland was fired from both Solar Opposites (which he co-created with Mike McMahan) and Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty (which he co-created with Dan Harmon) earlier this year in the wake of domestic violence allegations that took a while to surface. Those charges were later dropped due to “insufficient evidence,” with Roiland describing the outcome as “justice,” having maintained all along that the allegations were “false.”
Regardless, Adult Swim plans to hire two voice actors to replace Roiland on Rick and Morty, on which he voices both title characters. Meanwhile, Hulu has yet to make a decision regarding the fate of Koala Man, which debuted in January. Roiland voiced a character and served as an executive producer on the first season.
Stevens is no stranger to Hulu, having recently starred in its limited series Welcome to Chippendales. He also starred in the FX series Legion, which streamed on Hulu. He also has a relationship with 20th Animation, as he voices a role in its Apple TV+ series Central Park.
The star of films as different as Beauty and the Beast and The Guest, Stevens will take over the voice role of Korvo, a grouchy alien who claims to hate Earth and desperately wants to fix their spaceship so he can flee to a new planet. Stevens has already started recording, as Hulu has released a clip from Season 4 of Solar Opposites, which will debut on Aug. 14.
Hulu has already renewed Solar Opposites for Season 5, and the streamer is planning a Valentine’s Day special next year. You can hear Stevens voicing Korvo in the video below. The actor is represented by CAA, and the Hollywood Reporter broke the news of his casting.
