The Flash director Andy Muschietti is set to direct the Batman movie The Brave and the Bold for Warner Bros. and DC Studios.
“We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan,” DC CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran told Variety. “It’s a magnificent film — funny, emotional, thrilling — and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame. So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said ‘yes.’ Barbara signed on to produce with us and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”
The Brave and the Bold is currently without a writer, but it will feature both Batman and Robin — the latter character’s first appearance since 1997’s Batman and Robin.
Warner Bros. and DC will cast a brand new Batman for the movie, which will exist separately from Matt Reeves‘ Batman trilogy starring Robert Pattinson.
Based on the comic series by Grant Morrison, The Brave and the Bold imagines a “Bat family” in which Bruce Wayne’s biological son Damian serves as Robin alongside his father’s Batman.
Muschietti and his sister, Barbara, will produce the superhero movie under their Double Dream banner alongside Gunn and Safran. Muschietti’s involvement has been rumored by comic book movie blogs for several weeks, and I confirmed that it was a “done deal” on the June 8 episode of The Hot Mic podcast, but Variety actually got Gunn to confirm it, so kudos to the trade.
