Exclusive: Michael Stuhlbarg Joins Matt Damon and Casey Affleck in Apple’s The Instigators

Fresh off a fantastic turn in the Showtime series Your Honor, Michael Stuhlbarg has joined Oscar winners Matt Damon and Casey Affleck in Apple’s original movie The Instigators, Above the Line has exclusively learned.

Doug Liman is directing the crime film, which will co-star Oscar-nominated actress Hong Chau (The Whale) and Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell).

Damon and Ben Affleck are producing under their Artists Equity banner along with Jeff Robinov and John Graham of Studio 8, and Kevin Walsh of The Walsh Company. Production is currently underway in Boston.

Written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, the latter of whom developed the project with Studio 8, The Instigators follows two thieves who go on the run with the help of one of their therapists after a robbery goes awry.

Stuhlbarg’s role is being kept under wraps, but he’s a two-time Emmy nominee for his work in a pair of Hulu limited series — Dopesick and The Looming Tower.

In addition to Your Honor, Stuhlbarg’s recent credits include the HBO Max series The Staircase and Marvel’s Doctor Strange sequel. He also recently played a cannibal in Luca Guadagnino‘s Bones and All, and he’s slated to star in Sam Taylor-Johnson‘s drama Rothko alongside Russell Crowe. He’s represented by CAA and Viking Entertainment, which had no comment when reached on Wednesday evening.
