Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth Poised to Star in Guillermo Del Toro’s Live-Action Frankenstein Movie

Two-time Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield, Emmy nominee Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth are poised to star in Guillermo del Toro‘s next live-action film, which will be an adaptation of Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein.

Del Toro will direct from his own screenplay, which he’s still writing, and Netflix has committed to finance the project, though the streamer hasn’t made any offers to actors just yet. Hence, why the trio is merely “poised” to star according to the lede of this story. But Deadline broke the news, reporting that del Toro has met with all three actors and they’ve committed to star. I can’t imagine why Netflix wouldn’t go along with that plan.

It’s unclear whether Garfield will play Dr. Frankenstein or Frankenstein’s monster, but Goth is expected to play the doctor’s love interest. It’s also unclear whether the film will be a period piece or set in modern times.

Del Toro is coming off an Oscar win for Netflix’s Pinocchio movie, while Garfield is coming off an Oscar nomination for Tick, Tick… Boom! as well as Emmy and SAG Awards nominations for his starring turn in FX’s limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. The actor is also in negotiations to star opposite his Oscars co-presenter Florence Pugh in the comic love story We Live in Time from Brooklyn director John Crowley.

Isaac recently starred in Dune: Part One and Paul Schrader‘s thriller The Card Counter, as well as HBO’s Scenes From a Marriage and Marvel’s Moon Knight series. He also just signed on to play Kurt Vonnegut in the limited series Helltown. As for Goth, she’s red hot in the wake of X, Pearl, and Infinity Pool, and she’ll soon be seen in Ti West‘s A24 trilogy closer Maxxxine, which is slated to co-star Kevin Bacon and singer Halsey.
