Amazon Studios is in final negotiations for a series adaptation of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips‘ comic book series Criminal, Above the Line has learned.
Brubaker will serve as showrunner and executive producer, and a writers room is already up and running at Amazon, where the project is a top priority for Nick Pepper and Matt King. Those two executives came to Amazon from Legendary Television, which is expected to have a credit on the Criminal series.
In fact, Above the Line reached out to a representative for Legendary Television earlier this week about the project, but they did not respond to a request for comment. We’d heard that Amazon was aggressively pursuing it, and lo and behold, it appears that a deal is near.
Brubaker is separately co-writing a feature adaptation of his graphic novel Pulp with Oscar-winning writer Tom McCarthy, as ATL first reported. That project could now very well wind up at Amazon given its budding relationship with Brubaker, who also co-created Too Old to Die Young for the streamer alongside Nicolas Winding Refn.
Brubaker has been active elsewhere as well, having served as a supervising producer on HBO’s Westworld and as co-showrunner on the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader, in addition to working on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for Disney+ and Marvel.
