Oscar-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and Emmy-winning Dopesick creator Danny Strong are teaming up to executive produce an adaptation of Catherine Lacey‘s novel The Answers for FX, Above the Line has confirmed.
The series will be written by Kit Steinkellner, the creator of the Facebook Watch series Sorry for Your Loss, which starred Elizabeth Olsen. Steinkellner will also serve as an EP on The Answers, for which FX has ordered a pilot.
Set in the near future, The Answers follows a heartbroken young woman who agrees to participate in an experiment that promises to help women find love, but after she and her fellow participants move into an idyllic, secluded location they start questioning what’s really happening in the experiment, and why they’ve all been asked to date the same mysterious man.
Gillian Robespierre (Obvious Child) will direct the pilot as well as executive produce alongside Aronofsky, Strong, and Steinkellner, plus Ari Handel and Elizabeth Gesas of Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures and Mandy Safavi of Danny Strong Productions. The Answers is being produced by Disney’s 20th Television.
Aronofsky is already in business with FX, which handed his drama Kindred a series order earlier this year, though the network remains committed to shooting pilots and taking its time when it comes to development. Aronofsky has The Whale opening in December, and though it’s garnering some divisive reviews from sensitive critics, I thought it was quite good.
Steinkellner is an award-winning playwright and graphic novelist who has developed projects with numerous studios, networks, and streamers, including Amazon, Hulu, Lionsgate, Netflix, Showtime, and Sony. She’s repped by Circle of Confusion, while CAA represents Aronofsky, Strong, and Lacey.
